Position: Consultant
Neil has been a solicitor for over forty years and began his career in 1969 with Holmes Butterfield and Hartley in Burnley. This practice became part of Donald Race & Newton in 1989.
During his early years in the profession Neil covered a very wide range of legal work but, ultimately, this centred around Wills, Probate and Conveyancing.
He also undertook work for the Building Society sector in which he had a special interest, as his father had been the Chief Executive of the Borough Building Society in Burnley.
This interest continued to develop culminating in his appointment as Solicitor to the Marsden Building Society in 1989. For a number of years he combined the role with his work at the practice.
In 1993, Neil was appointed Deputy Chief Executive of the Marsden Building Society and in 1998 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Society. During his time at the Marsden, Neil was Chairman of the Northern Association of Building Societies and was invited to become a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers for his services to the financial sector. Neil remained a consultant at Donald Race & Newton throughout his time at the Building Society.
Neil retired from the Society in April 2011 but continues his consultancy at Donald Race & Newton and is based at the firm’s Hargreaves Street office.
The time spent in both the legal profession and the Building Society sector gives him an almost unique experience, but an undiminished enthusiasm for the role of a solicitor.
He regards the maintenance of a reasonable level of physical fitness as the most important use of his leisure.
